Schaumbad – Freies Atelierhaus Graz is a self-organised platform of artists, currently engaged in the restoration of a new studio-house in a former factory in Graz (AT).
The artists involved work in all artistic fields, from visual arts, media art, photography and video up to performance, literature and music. This creates a mutually inspiring neighbourhood fostering synergies, such as mutual support or collective projects.
Founded in 2008 in a former bathroom warehouse, Schaumbad established a diverse exhibition programme (annual group show, steirischer:altweibersommer…), as well as lively networked activities with local and international artists and art spaces, such as symposia, workshops, online networked projects and exhibition exchange. The group had to move out of their building in 2011.
In summer 2013 we moved into a new space, since then working on the restoration of the big factory hall in order to divide it into individual studios and an exhibition space. In parallel, we continue our programs in between the construction site: exhibitions, artist talks, multi-media installations, performances, concerts, discourse… Our long-term community art- and research project "Am Südrand" (On the Southern Edge) tries to explore our co-industrial environment and to involve people living in between these industrial zones with slaughterhouse and dumpsite, prison and graveyard, as well as prayer houses of different religions.
